Working Group on Caspian Legal Status Convention ends 28th meeting

The Working Group on development of Convention on Caspian Legal Status ended its 28th meeting in Baku. Representatives of the Caspian littoral states held a press conference after the meeting. Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov said they reached progress in the discussions: “A great work has been done. We had a dialogue for coordination of some issue, but many points are still uncoordinated”.

Khalafov said the use of Caspian Sea’s surface, differences between the national zones, rights of the countries on the sea, navigation and navy forces were among the uncoordinated issues.

Special Representative of the Iranian President for the Caspian issues Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh said that the USSR-Iran treaty on the legal status of the Caspian Sea would remain in force until the adoption of five-party convention.

The Working Group on development of Convention on the Caspian Legal Status will hold its next meeting in Moscow. The summit of the leaders of the Caspian littoral states will also take place in Moscow.
