Armenian MP’s provocation prevented at PACE Monitoring Committee meeting

A report was discussed Wednesday at the Paris meeting of the PACE Monitoring Committee, within the framework of the mission of the ad hoc Sub-Committee on Conflicts between Member States of the Council of Europe, Elkhan Suleymanov, a member of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, told APA.

Addressing the meeting, Suleymanov said the Sub-Committee will be dealing with the issues of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, northern Cyprus, Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories, the Transnistrian and Crimea, the conflict in eastern Ukraine, etc.

He noted that right after Sub-Committee chairman, co-rapporteur Stefan Schennach finished his speech, Armenian delegation member Rustamyan outlined that the phrase “Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories” is contrary to the internationally accepted definition.

“He said this is ‘absolutely unacceptable.’ Co-rapporteur on Armenia Alan Meale expressed support for the Armenian member’s opinion, while Schennach rejected it. But the Armenian MP insisted on his opinion and caused a big scandal,” said Azerbaijani MP.

Put to the vote by the Monitoring Committee’s chairperson, the proposed correction disapproved with 31 votes against and 3 in favor, stressed Suleymanov.

He added that the initial decision which included the phrase “Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories” proposed by Schennach was unanimously approved with only one vote against.
