U.S. Embassy in Baku explained situation around the ceasing of operations of the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Azerbaijan. Terry R. Davidson Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy Baku said the United States has since Azerbaijan’s independence been a solid supporter of democratic reforms and development here. “U.S. commitment in support of political reforms and strengthening of democratic institutions remains firm. In recent years the primary U.S. government partners have included the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES)”, said Terry Davidson.
“USAID has just completed its periodic review of programs and asked for new proposals. In that internal process, both NDI and IFES submitted proposals and they will continue to collaborate with the Embassy. IRI did not take part, and, as a result, will cease operations in Azerbaijan,” said Davidson. “IRI has made a significant contribution to our efforts to strengthen democracy here.”
IRI Office in Baku will end its activity on November 30.
