PACE president Movlud Cavusoglu: PACE will do its best to solve frozen conflicts

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will do its best to solve the frozen conflicts, According to Trend News, new chairman of PACE and the chairman of the Turkish delegation of PACE, Movlud Cavusoglu stated, referring the role of PACE in the solution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“The solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is very important for Europe and this question awaits its resolution,” he said. “The OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries, as well as Switzerland, recently continues their efforts to resolve the conflict. The agreement which they try to achieve must be mutual. Rapprochement Armenian-Turkish relations will contribute to the process of establishing peace and stability in the region. The PACE will make every effort to resolve this issue peacefully. War is not the way of solving the problems of our continent, “he added.

The conflict between two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.
