Izmir Declaration on Future of European Court of Human Rights adopted

The participants of the conference once again proved their countries’ commitment to the European Convention on Human Rights and activity of the European Court of Human Rights. The Declaration reads that the participating countries accept unprecedented contributions of the European Court to the protection of Human Rights in Europe. The participating countries are committed to Interlaken Declaration adopted on February 19, 2010 and principles of Action Plan and urged to develop the Interlaken process and to conduct necessary reforms for more fruitful work of the Court.

The Declaration reminded the subsidiary character of the mechanism of European Convention on Human Rights as a fundamental principle and said both European Court and participating countries undertook to develop efficiency of the Convention.

The sides also expressed concern about the significant number of appeals to the Court and emphasizing Protocol No. 14 as an efficient document, they also pointed out that it can not completely to solve global problems the Convention faces today. The participants also appreciated the talks on EU joining the European Convention on Human Rights and significant progresses after the Interlaken conference.
