Azerbaijani and Armenian MPs have decided to continue intensive meetings to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. “During Moscow’s talks, the sides said that similar talks can be held in Baku, Yerevan and even in the neutral territory in future,” MP Sabir Hajiyev told Trend News on Oct, 23.

Azerbaijani MPs, including Rabiyyat Aslanova, Ali Huseynov, Rovshan Rzayev, Sabir Hajiyev və Mikhail Zabelin attended the round table organized in Russian Duma on October 22. Armenian and Russian MPs participated there as well.

Chairman of the Committee for CIS Affairs and Contacts with Compatriots Alexei Ostrovsky, member of the Armenian Permanent Committee on Economic Affairs Ermine Nagdalyan and ambassadors of Armenia and Azerbaijan to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu and Armen Smbatyan also took part in the event.

According to Hajiyev, during the meeting in Russian Duma, the sides have not reached a concrete agreement on Azerbaijani MPs’ visit to Nagorno-Karabakh. “Despite it, Azerbaijani MPs’ visit to Nagorno-Karabakh is not excluded. The visit to Nagorno-Karabakh greatly depends on Russia’s corresponding organizations, as the initiative to meet with the Armenian MPs comes from Russia, “the MP said.

According to Hajiyev, it is not ruled out that Moscow’s meeting will give certain impetus to the settlement of the conflict. “Our main goal is to support negotiations between the presidents, as well as between foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Hajiyev said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations without resultes.
