On Oct. 20, the session of the Parliament of Azerbaijan adopted amendments to the Law on Prosecutor’s Office. The reference of Trend News: According to article 133 of the Constitution of Azerbaijan, the Prosecutor General is appointed and dismissed by the President with the consent of Parliament.
Upon the article 16 of the Law on Prosecutor’s Office, the term of office of the Prosecutor General is five years. A citizen can not be appointed to this position for more than two times. Acting Prosecutor-General Zakir Garalov was appointed for the second time. His term will end in April 2010.
The bill, sent to the Parliament by President Ilham Aliyev, as legislative initiative, envisages removing the restrictions on the appointment of one person for the post of Prosecutor General, the Military Prosecutor and the Prosecutor General and the Military Prosecutor of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
