Azerbaijan expects serious respect towards the rule of law and the international law from the international organizations, Azerbaijani MP told Trend Apr.21.
Asim Mollazade, Azerbaijani MP and a political scientist, was commenting on the creation of the subcommittee on conflicts in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Talking about Azerbaijan’s expectations from the future activities of the new subcommittee, the MP said that all the decisions adopted in such organizations should correspond to their charter, as well as the charters of UN and OSCE.
“Azerbaijan today urgently needs peace and we want this peace to be restored within the international law, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and PACE itself,” said Mollazade.
High-level PACE representative is expected to head the subcommittee, according to the Azerbaijani MP.
The decision to create the subcommittee on conflicts in PACE was adopted on Apr.20 in Strasbourg during the spring session of PACE.
As part of the activities of the subcommittee, PACE is expected to pay more attention to the conflicts on the territories of the organization’s member states, including the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
