Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan paid an official visit to Baku on April 20 and discussed the issues related to the bilateral cooperation in military sphere, as well as latest regional developments with senior Azerbaijani officials.
The sides negotiated a wide-range of cooperation issues, including experience transfer in the area of military technology, as well as issues related to cooperation in military education, Mohsen Pak Ayeen, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Iran to Azerbaijan told Trend.
Dehghan held separate meetings with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev as well as defense minister Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov and Minister of Defense Industry Yavar Jamalov in the one-day visit, he added.
Tehran and Baku also discussed cooperation in regional issues including fighting with terrorism and extremism, Pak Ayeen said.
He further said that the border security issue was also negotiated in the meetings.
Iran and Azerbaijan agreed to establish a joint working group for boosting cooperation in defensive and security areas, he said, adding the working group will comprise officials and experts from the both parties.
While responding a question about possible supply of military equipments to Azerbaijan by Tehran Pak Ayeen said that the experts of the both sides in the working group will study and make decision on various aspects of the cooperation based on the interests of the parties.
It should be noted that Azerbaijan’s defense minister visited Tehran last April.
The issues related to military education, organization and holding of command staff meetings, provision with equipment and weapons were discussed between Azerbaijan and Iran in the two-day visit.
