“This summer during my visit to Azerbaijan I asked the President, the Prime Minister and all the related state bodies to carry out the commitments of the European Council.
PACE has learned about the democratic situation in Azerbaijan and made some demands on releasing of the politicians and journalists.
Recently I received the information about the releasing of 80 people according to the Decree of Amnesty of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic. But I can not say if this decree has included all the considered prisoners”. Luis Maria de Puig, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe stated these words while answering to the question on the political prisoners in Azerbaijan at the press conference dedicated to the beginning of the PACE autumn session.
Stating that he hoped the process of the releasing of the prisoners would be continued in the future the president touched upon the upcoming presidential elections:
“Generally, I hope that the presidential elections will be held according to the principles of the EU and democracy will be completely implemented. During my visit to Azerbaijan the president Ilham Aliev himself guaranteed the holding of the upcoming elections in a completely democratic way”.
