UN convoy hit by explosion in Baghdad

A UN convoy of three vehicles was hit by at least one explosion in Baghdad, capital of Iraq, Monday morning, a UN spokesperson confirmed, Xinhua reported.

“According to the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), no UN personnel were killed or injured in the incident but one of the vehicles sustained serious damage,” Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, said at a daily news briefing held here Monday.

The incident will not deter the UN from continuing its work in support of Iraq and its people, said Haq, quoting the Secretary- General’s Special Representative, Nickolay Mladenov.

The convoy was proceeding from the Baghdad International Airport to the International Zone when it was hit by the explosion this morning. All personnel were safely back to the UN Compound, according to UNAMI.

Mladenov is expected to brief the Security Council on the latest developments in Iraq Tuesday.
