Azerbaijani police to provide security during parliamentary election

The police of Azerbaijan stand ready, within the framework of law, to stop all the acts aimed at violating the voting process during parliamentary election, Oruj Zalov, the deputy interior minister of Azerbaijan, said August 21.

He was addressing a meeting at the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, held for the chairmen of district election commissions.

Zalov said a special action plan has been developed to ensure security during the parliamentary election.

“The action plan will be sent to local authorities for execution,” he said.

He added that it is planned to complete, until late October, the work to improve the vigilance of the internal affairs agencies’ employees, to maintain the public order and the necessary security conditions, and to suppress groundless interference in the election process.

It is also planned, according to Zalov, to switch by late October all the agencies and units of the Interior Ministry to enhanced work mode, to refine lists of citizens eligible to vote, and to provide them with documents confirming their identity.

He said the relevant services and the local authorities of the Interior Ministry, together with the ASAN Service, are holding outreach services and are working to issue IDs to persons who have reached the legal age, as well as to replace the IDs.

This work will be completed before late October.

He said that instructions for the protection of buildings that will house the district and precinct election commissions were given for the period of the election campaign.

He also drew attention to the process of updating voter lists.

“People are moving from villages to cities and from cities to villages,” said Zalov. “Such cases may arise on the threshold of election as well. Therefore every issue raised by the election commissions will be updated.”

In addition, it is provided to hold trainings for officers of the police together with the district and precinct election commissions.

He went on to add that the delivery of ballots to polling stations and district electoral commissions following the election will be ensured.

“The police are obliged to ensure the rights of both voters and the elected ones,” said the deputy minister. “If the candidate is registered, all conditions for his or her meetings with voters will be created. Full security will be ensured at the meetings of voters.”

Parliamentary election in Azerbaijan is scheduled for November.
